The fascinating history of the Blue Mountains
The Blue Mountains were formed over a million years ago and were home to the Indigenous Australians the Daruk people, who lived off the land for over 30,000 years. Rock art created by the Daruk people is still located through out the mountains and can be seen when you are exploring the region. The name behind the mountains is exceptionally intriguing, previously known as Carmarthen Hills or Landsdowne Hills, the Blue Mountains did not receive its name until later on. Due to the mountains being filled with oil bearing Eucalyptus trees, the droplets of oil combined with dust and water create rays of light which are a blue colour, this is where the name Blue Mountains originated.
